Classrooms of the Future

Sacred Heart Model School is a tight-knit community of fewer than 400 students ranging in age from Junior Kindergarten through Level 8. With an 8:1 student to teacher ratio and average class size between 12 and 15, our unique environment promotes differentiated, hands-on learning and collaboration amongst students and teachers.

SHMS’ International Baccalaureate (IB) educational paradigm is the best education practice and focuses on the future – and our learning environments reflect that forward-looking approach.

No two SHMS classrooms are the same, but they all naturally support the facets of IB learning - collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity. Our classroom spaces are active, student-centered, inquiry-based environments where we challenge students to take academic risks to develop their research, writing, and critical-thinking skills.

These flexible, dynamic classrooms of the future have everything from balance balls, standing desks, comfortable reading nooks, and stationary bicycle pedals to innovative collaboration spaces. Our interactive touch-screen panels and 1:1 Surface Go and Chromebook program ensure SHMS stays ahead of the curve in the technological advances needed to support this dynamic model. Our students have the tools they need to remain engaged and excited about learning.

With one of our two academic buildings dedicated just to middle school, SHMS can offer a differentiated learning environment to this group of students who are approaching and adjusting to their teenage years. Our middle school building houses Levels 6-8 in state-of-the-art classrooms designed for students learning in the IB Middle Years Programme. This building also houses a brand-new science laboratory with all the latest tools and equipment that resembles what you’d find in the high school environment.

Campus Community

Teachers and students use all 48 acres of the Ursuline Campus, with innovation spaces, science labs, dedicated visual and performing arts spaces, a TV studio, and the latest LED touch panel classroom technology. Teachers often take classes out into our sprawling outdoor learning spaces, including our amphitheater, grotto, piazza area, playground, and more.

SHMS shares the Ursuline Campus with Sacred Heart Preschool, Sacred Heart Academy, Sacred Heart School for the Arts, and the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville. Engaging regularly with our campus neighbors provides unique opportunities for peer leadership, intergenerational learning, faith formation, and collaboration. Our campus schools also reap the benefits of shared resources and facilities that may not otherwise be available to a single school. Premier athletic facilities, a 500-seat performing arts venue, and abundant green space are just a few examples.

At Sacred Heart Model School, we are committed to ensuring our learning environments enhance the innovative education provided to all students.
